As the shipping industry today relies to a large extent on high-sulphur fuels, we are working with our partners to develop various desulfurization technologies to meet current and future emissions standards by cutting up sulfur oxides in the exhaust gas by up to 95 per cent. The main technology currently used in marine applications are scrubbers, based on the use of seawater or freshwater with an alkaline reagent like caustic soda. The combination of both systems, so-called hybrid scrubbers, maximizes the operation’s efficiency depending on boundary conditions and thus keeps operating costs low. This enables the ship to run on HFO while continuing to comply with the IMO sulfur limits. Highly efficient SCR systems for new engines can be retrofitted to engine applications already in service.
